Celibacy is a voluntary commitment to sexual abstinence. In some cases, it may also involve a commitment to remain single. Celibacy can look different for everyone, so there is no single way to practise it. Some people refrain from all sexual activity (including penetrative and non-penetrative sex), whilst others engage in petting.
Although celibacy is usually associated with religion, there are many other reasons why someone might choose to live a celibate life.
Is celibacy the same as abstinence?
Although many people use „celibacy“ and „abstinence“ interchangeably, there is a difference between the two terms. Abstinence usually refers to a decision not to have penetrative sex. It is usually limited to a specific period of time, such as until marriage. Celibacy is a vow not to have sex for an extended period of time. For some people, this may mean for their entire life.
Ultimately, whether it is celibacy or abstinence, it is up to the individual to decide what is and is not part of their lifestyle, and which sexual activities to engage in or refrain from.
Is celibacy always motivated by religion?
Some people have adopted religious principles that encourage or require celibacy as part of their practice. But that does not mean that everyone who lives a celibate life is influenced by religion – there are many other reasons for choosing this way of life.
Why do people choose to live a celibate life?
Some people practise celibacy as a way of feeling closer to their faith or committing themselves to a higher power in which they believe. Celibacy can also be a way of developing deeper relationships without the physical element. For some, celibacy is a way of feeling better. It can help shift their focus away from relationships or sex and turn it inwards, allowing them to concentrate on personal development. For others, it might be a medical decision following a diagnosis of a sexually transmitted infection as a way to prevent transmission.
